But complex systems are much bigger. There are not many books and papers about it yet because it's just a starting subject, so not a whole lot is known about it. But if you look at chaos as a tiny little thing you need to learn before you approach complex systems, it's really tiny, tiny, tiny compared to complex systems, so that has to be clear. Chaos is mathematics. The books and papers on chaos were written by mathematicians. And mathematicians, as you may know, have a way of coming into a subject when it's already very well in progress.
Presumably, this means this: suppose that in an equation of motions of systems, there exists a parameter, or several parameters which people call control parameters, which can be changed depending on the environment. It could be the temperature, the concentration, the intensity of some external effect like sunlight, or stuff like that. And we know that chaotic systems are not chaotic all of the time. Under some circumstances they are chaotic, and then if you change the control parameters, they are not.
If you'd like some broad looks at nonlinear dynamics, these are called Perspectives on Nonlinear Dynamics, and they are a two volume set, and they will keep you busy for some time. It kept me busy for a long time in trying to put it together. So my focus is very much on dynamics, and as such, I've never been in the mainstream of physics. If there is one thing physicists don't know much about, it's dynamics, and I'm very serious about that, and I'll show you why. In any case, the title of the talk here is concerning what I want to talk about: the idea of the evolution of nature's dynamics, and the issue of unifying principles.
