So too in philosophy, Plato in his Timaeus builds the nourishment of the body into his account of the creation of the cosmos and the human form (see Chapter 7). The Greeks and Romans gave a number of different accounts of human progress, from primitivism or the Garden of Eden to divine intervention.
The myth of the rape (or abduction) of Persephone was told in an early poem, the Homeric Hymn to Demeter. This sets out the relationship between the life and ‘death’ of Persephone, the growing of corn, and human dependence on the goddesses: when Demeter mourns, famine strikes the population (Foley 1993). The myth of Demeter was also linked to a major festival in Athens and many other towns, the Thesmophoria, which is discussed in Chapter 3. It is clear that with the grain Demeter brought other social beneﬁts, the thesmoi or ordinances by which men live, and also the patronage of conception and some control over life and death.
