Lady Murasaki completed this lengthy novel under Michinaga’s protection. As Michinaga expected, The Tale of Genji attracted the emperor, who loved literature, and Shoshi was blessed with two sons, who both later became emperors. Michinaga’s own power increased in the meantime. Murasaki Shikibu resided on the present site of Rozan-ji Murasaki Shikibu was born into a middle-rank noble family that kept provincial government positions. While her mother passed away early, she was a talented child and her father, a well-known literary man, educated her.

He was given the castle of Nagoya by his father, Oda Nobuhide, and became a lord when he was only 2 years old. After his father passed away, he succeeded as ruler of the Oda clan at the age of 18. Even though he was called a fool and people worried about his future when he was a young boy, he gradually displayed his capabilities as a warrior and came to unite the Owari region (the western part of Aichi Prefecture). In 1560, he made a bold ambush to defeat the large army of Imagawa Yoshimoto at the battle of Okehazama—where no one imagined that Nobunaga could possibly win—and became a contender toward unifying Japan.

Some researchers claim that Uji Jujo was written by someone other than Murasaki Shikibu, possibly even a man. However, the belief that Lady Murasaki is the author is widely accepted. Uji was blessed with nature’s beauty and Heian aristocrats preferred to have their villas there. Minamoto-no-Toru, who is believed to be a model for Hikaru Genji, and Fujiwara Michinaga, Lady Murasaki’s patron, had villas in Uji, where they enjoyed taking their boats out and viewing the autumn foliage. Lady Murasaki would have likely accompanied Empress Shoshi on visits to Uji and gained ideas for the story.
