During the active years of Miss Sherman's bird studies she appeared on programs of the American Ornithologists' Union and the Wilson Ornith. Club. Those who heard and met her at such meetings never forgot her. Her inimitable mannerisms, her charming personality, her forceful and pungent wit, her knowledge of the subject treated and her ability to present it interestingly, made her appearance on a program an attraction. She was known and beloved by the leading contemporary ornithologists of the United States and Canada.
Extracts of it appeared in farm journals and in the public press. Miss Sherman received many letters about the article. Some of these writers had not made a special study of bird behaviour. Some questioned Miss Sherman's knowledge of the subject! Such unwarranted criticism she could not ignore. She followed the matter with several succeeding articles and vehemently defended the position she had taken. For several years there had been on the Sherman grounds a Purple Martin house of a popular make.
