INTRODUCTION Dopamine (DA) has been shown to be contained, in the rabbit superior cervical ganglia (SCG), in an interneuron called "small intensely fluorescent (SIF)" cell (Eränkö and Härkönen, 1963; Libet and Owman, 1974). As for the possible physio­ logical role of DA in the rabbit SCG, it is proposed that 1) DA directly hyperpolarizes the membrane of postganglionic neurons and 2) DA also induces a long lasting modulatory enhancement of the slow excitatory postsynaptic potential (Libet and Tosaka, 1970).
