The Visual Context for Hunting Imagery The kinds of images that accompany hunting on the same vase can further our understanding of the iconology of hunting depictions. Often the Hunting, Warfare, and Aristocrats 33 juxtaposition of hunt scenes with other themes on the same vase, particularly in the period c. 520–480, contributes to the heroic, aristocratic character of the hunting depictions themselves. Sometimes the connections between scenes on a vase are more obvious than on others. But even when using stock repertoire, vase painters or designers choose one image and not another to decorate their vases, and we must ask ourselves what compels this particular choice.
